Can You Learn to Be Sexy?

The science and psychology of attraction, and why being sexy has far less to do with perfect looks than we might think.

What actually makes someone sexy? We tend to think the answer is obvious: a good face, a good body and whatever society has decided is attractive at that particular moment. But in this episode of After Hours, Stephen and I quickly realise that attraction is much more complicated. We talk about physical appearance, fitness and cosmetic enhancements, but also confidence, posture, voice, humour, personality and the way someone carries themselves. I’ve noticed this in my own life too. Getting fitter may have changed how my clothes fit, but perhaps more importantly, it changed how I feel about myself. And when you feel more confident, other people often notice it.

The conversation eventually comes back to a question I find much more interesting: can somebody who doesn’t fit the traditional definition of beautiful still be sexy? I think absolutely yes. I wasn’t the stereotypically good-looking kid growing up, and in hindsight I’m grateful for some of what that taught me. I learnt to communicate, to make people laugh, to be courteous, to work hard and, eventually, to become more comfortable with myself. Those things accumulate. Sexiness changes with age and culture, but it also changes as we change. Maybe attraction isn’t one perfect feature at all. Maybe it’s the whole package: how you look, how you speak, how you treat people and, most importantly, how comfortable you are being yourself.
